Historical Medieval UFO Sighting in 1561: Did Aliens Appear Over Medieval Town?

Our colored version of the original woodcut depicting the mysterious celestial event from the 16th century

On the fourth day of March in the year 1561, on a Friday at six o'clock in the evening, under a bright sky over the city of Ernskirchen, a large black mass suddenly appeared, followed by the apparition of two lights, between which the following celestial phenomenon took place:

Two corpses were seen, covered in black funeral garments, lying on catafalques. One of the corpses, smaller in size, was positioned at the back; the other, larger, lay in the center of the spectacle.
Beside them stood funeral bearers on both sides, wearing black hoods.

Soon, it seemed as though the bearers intended to carry the corpses elsewhere— specifically to the front of the scene, where many freshly dug graves had also been prepared, but in the end, they never did.

This vision remained in the heavens for quite some time before it disappeared. But what it all means, only God knows.

Our Evaluation of the Alleged UFO Sighting:

The account of this truly bizarre phenomenon allegedly witnessed over Ernskirchen on March 4, 1561, presents a striking scene: funeral figures, catafalques, and freshly dug graves in the sky.

Described with vivid detail, the report invites a range of interpretations. First and foremost, it can be seen as a reflection of the era’s religious mindset, in which strange celestial events were often interpreted as divine messages. While we cannot exclude the possibility of an early observation of an unexplained aerial phenomenon—for example, many flying humanoids caught on camera around the globe resemble coffins in footage—no definitive conclusion can be drawn solely from this historical record.

Nevertheless, the event remains a compelling. If nothing else, it is enjoyable to read for its macabre, poetic language.
