Exploring Ancient and Medieval UFOs: The Renaissance Shepherd’s Mysterious 1571 Encounter in Poland

The honest and godly shepherd woke up on the sixth day of June, 1571, at four o’clock in the morning and went with his flock of sheep into the field, as he had done many times before. He led them to the meadow near the forest, where, around noon, he fell asleep.

After he had slept for about an hour and a half, a terrible storm arose, with fierce thunder and lightning, which awakened the shepherd. As he looked around, he saw a cloud descending from the sky and moving toward him. Terrified, he staggered and fell to his knees, when suddenly, a voice rose from the cloud and said:

“Do not be afraid, but come and listen to me.”

The shepherd, however, grew even more frightened than ever before and remained petrified, powerless, as the voice continued:

“Blood hangs from the sun like a scarf, giving it a purple color, and one wound heals the other.”

When the voice spoke in such a manner, the cloud disappeared, and everything returned to normal.

Our Evaluation of the Alleged UFO Sighting

The 1571 report combines natural phenomena—a violent storm—with a supernatural encounter: a descending cloud, a voice from nowhere, and a mysterious message. From a modern perspective, one might interpret the event as a vivid hallucination brought on by exhaustion or stress caused by the storm.

UFO researchers could also argue that the description of a cloud descending with a voice emanating from within resembles modern accounts of unidentified aerial crafts and their alleged communications with contactees.

Others may see it as a pure religious vision deeply influenced by the cultural context of the 16th century.

This is likewise our view. The mysterious message heard in this encounter, with the highest probability, is a reference to the Passion of Christ on the Cross.
